Galveston TX
January 20, 2007
The history of Galveston, Texas serves as a testament to its endearing popularity as one of the Gulf Coast's most unique and exciting settlements. Chartered in 1839, the city of Galveston was used as the Southwest's main port of entry. Its roots stretch back to the Galveston City Company, which served as the center for cotton, flour, and grain commodities markets in the 19th century.
After the Civil War, the development of Galveston really took off. This is the era in which many of the East End Victorian houses and The Strand were built. The Storm of 1900 was a devastating blow to the island, but one that would ultimately spur the building of a 16-foot high, 17-foot wide sea wall. In addition, it ushered in a standard of home building with "piers and beams," architecture that can withstand stronger Gulf storms.
The early part of the 20th century saw Galveston a gambling port city, but that reputation ended after World War II. During the Second World War, Galveston became an air base where B-17 bombers were stationed. In the latter half of the 20th century, Galveston invested heavily in the sciences and arts. Galveston College, the Texas Maritime Academy, the Marine Biomedical Institute, and the Galveston County Cultural Arts Council were all established during this time.
Today, Galveston, Texas is as much an island of recreation as it is a center of commerce. Still commercially important because of the port of Galveston, the island is a symbol of success and beauty. I consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to work here, and see the city moving forward.
