Things to do in Galveston Texas (part one)
Things to do in Galveston Texas -Galveston Island BeachesJune 18, 2006
So, you’ve spent your hard earned money to get to Galveston, but what do you do when you get here? Well, after checking into your vacation rental, head on over to one of the two visitor centers. After all, what better way to start than a place where every attraction, park, and restaurant is waiting to be found? The Galveston Island Visitors Centers are located at 2428 Seawall and 2215 Strand. If after you gather countless brochures and you still can’t decide what to do please let me make a few suggestions.
First, go to the beach! Galveston Island has all kinds of beaches to satisfy any need for sand and salt water. Galveston’s East beach is a nice large beach where you pay to enter, but you can drive right up to the water and you don’t have to carry your gear far. There is always something going on at the pavilion on East beach and they do sell food and souvenirs. East beach is great for large groups, parties or picnicking. Be wary if you have little ones as drinking alcohol on this beach is permitted.
If that is not what you are looking for, head toward the intersection of Broadway and Seawall to find Stewart beach. Also known as the “family beach,” families of all sizes are a welcome addition to this alcohol free beach. Another bit of information on this Galveston beach is that the parking is away from the beach so little kids will be further from driving cars. A putt-putt golf course is also located at this beach along with a diner, a large park, and showers.
Jamaica Beach has been hosting travelers for as long as most can remember. Jamaica beach is located about 10 minuets west of the Seawall and offers shopping, food, and nice beaches. These beaches allow you to park at the waters edge and walk to a vehicle restricted area, perfect for kids.
Another popular beach for the kid at heart is down at San Luis pass. Just turn right onto the seawall and head about 30 miles to the San Luis Pass Bridge. The whole western tip of the island is nice, clean, open sandy beach. Large dunes hold nesting birds and plenty of sand crabs.
Galveston fishing is top notch and the water is clear. Just be careful of the fast moving currents. People enjoy many water sports on the open sand of San Luis Pass. Kite boarders and powered Para gliders are a common sight.
Because Galveston is a long and skinny island we have about 32 miles of great beach access. Many of the beaches are unique and vary with popularity, but all are worth visiting! In the next section of “Things to do in Galveston Texas”, we will look at area attractions and theme parks.
