Information on Galveston, Texas attractions
May 16, 2009
Galveston is home to a vast array of popular attractions. Going to the beach is not the only thing to do while you are here. After checking into your vacation rental, there is anything from landmarks, historic buildings, waterparks, miniature golf to scenic natural areas. All of these combined make Galveston one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas.

As visitors cross the causeway, they will see pyramids along the western side of the island. They are part of Moody Gardens Galveston, which began in the mid '80s. The original purpose was to begin a hippotherapy riding program for people with head injuries, thus the beginning was a horse barn and riding area. Today, it offers such programs as horticultural therapy as well as educational and employment opportunities for persons with a wide range of physical and emotional disabilities. Also within the gardens are several aquariums, an IMAX theatre and rainforest pyramid.

Schlitterbahn, which originally started in New Braunfels, has now added a third location, Schlitterbahn Galveston. This waterpark is like no other in that it offers year round fun. You can swim outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter!

Some of the historic attractions in Galveston are the historic homes of galveston. Historic homes are links to Galveston's past that commands a tour from every tourist. Some of the homes that are open for tour include Moody Mansion, built in 1895 and is the perfect turn of the century home. Bishop's Palace, built in 1893, is elaborately built with colored stone and stained-glass windows, dragons and other sculptures atop. Truly beautiful attractions whose survivals of the worst hurricanes is a story in itself.

The Strand was built as a commerce center in the late 1800's. It, too, has withstood time and hurricanes to become one of the most popular shopping areas in Galveston. Parades for Mardi Gras and Dickens on the Strand are held here, as well as housing the Texas Seaport Museum and Tall Ship Elissa.

Another attraction in Galveston is the Lone Star Flight Museum which began as a private aircraft collection in 1985. Due to the acquisition of more aircraft, new housing had to be found. In 1990, construction began at Galveston's Scholes Field. Then in 1991, more construction was needed, which makes it what it is today. Not only does it have one of the largest displays of flying vintage aircraft, there is a display of memorabilia and artifacts.

So if you want more than just beach, Galveston offers it. The plethora of things to do here make it impossible to get done in a day. Come spend a week at one of our vacation places and enjoy it all!
