Galveston Fishing
January 29, 2007

The Galveston area is a fisherman’s dream. Galveston has Bay fishing, pier fishing, great offshore fishing, and great surf fishing action. It is hard to go fishing in Galveston without catching something. Depending on what your taste is you can try your luck at any of these types of fishing and more. For example, you can go on a guided trip to an offshore oil rig and learn how to catch Kingfish and Red Snapper, or you can don some waders and try your luck at big Redfish or Flounder. There are so many options that you can’t go wrong. In this article I would like to touch base on Bay fishing, pier fishing and offshore fishing. Luckily for me my father is a charter Captain in Galveston so I have first hand experience with all of these types of fishing.

Whether you’re just starting out or a pro, Galveston fishing can be great from one of the many piers on the island. Some piers are on the beach and some are on the bay. If you fish from the beach side piers like the 90th street fishing pier prepare to catch almost anything from large Redfish, Trout, Spanish Mackerel, Sharks, to Flounder. At times almost everything you can catch off shore or in the bay swims by the pier. You can take heavy tackle or light tackle and bait accordingly, however, mullet or shrimp are the baits of choice. Another popular pier is at the Seawolf Park on Pelican Island. It offers big Black Drum catches along with Flounder, Redfish, and Trout.

Galveston’s West bay is famous for large speckled Trout, Redfish, and Flounder. The bay’s fishing often appears on TV shows and in magazines alike. However, the bay is shallow and has many reefs to ruin the unsuspecting boaters day. The best way to fish the bay is with an experienced guide like Capt Cody, 713.828.6021, who can take you out and show you the “spots”.

Another hot spot for Galveston fishing is offshore fishing. It offers so much variety you can go 10 different times and never catch the same type of fish twice! Just a few species you can catch out of Galveston are Mahi-Mahi, Kingfish, Red Snapper, Ling, Black Tip shark, Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish, and more. There are private guided trips and party boats available. Galveston party boats can put you on the fish and I have been out with them a few times… call 409-763-5423. Be sure to drink lots of water, and follow the guide’s advice and you should have a great time.

As you can see you can’t go wrong with Galveston fishing. Be sure to obey all laws when fishing and don’t forget your fishing license. For some guides and party boats you will not need a license. However, if you do both Academy and Wal-Mart carry fishing gear and fishing licenses. Also remember that some of our canal homes like Captain Morgan’s offer great fishing at night under the lights and in the fall when the flounder run. Good Luck!
